Despite what some starry-eyed converts think, there was never a “Golden Age” of a united Church. There were always serious differences; often enough, they led to breakdowns in communion. Indeed, 1054 was a reconciliation effort gone horridly wrong. “Orthodox” and “Roman Catholic” were there from the first, although the names were not. I don’t say this in hatred… I say this in all regard for what I believe to be the truth. We’ll never know what would’ve happened if the western provinces hadn’t fallen to barbarian invaders in the fifth century. In any case, it’s useless to speculate, for that’s not what actually occurred. In all things, we must be realistic and attend to what happened, not what we wish happened. Wishful thinking NEVER leads to a good result.
